ATLANTA, Ga. (April 4, 2019) – As teams prepare for the upcoming NCAA Men’s and Women’s Final Four games this weekend, IMG College Licensing, in close coordination with the NCAA, is making preparations to clear the marketplace of potential counterfeit and unlicensed merchandise.
IMG College Licensing, the exclusive trademark licensing agent for the NCAA, as well as Auburn, Michigan State, and Texas Tech for the Men’s Final Four, and UConn and Baylor for the Women’s Final Four, will work closely with Minneapolis and Tampa Bay officials, law enforcement and private investigators to search for counterfeit merchandise and any other unauthorized use of trademarks owned by the NCAA and the participating institutions. All counterfeit merchandise is subject to seizure or surrender.
“While our primary goal is to protect the brand integrity of the NCAA and the participating institutions, we also want to protect the fans from purchasing unlicensed counterfeit merchandise that often is of inferior quality,” said Cory Moss, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of IMG College Licensing. “Our enforcement officials will be onsite to deter potential counterfeiters, and our team will also work to pursue online counterfeit efforts looking to capitalize on fans that can’t attend the game.”
“The NCAA is committed to providing the best experience possible for teams and fans in Minneapolis and Tampa Bay over Final Four weekend,” said Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president for basketball. “We work with IMG College Licensing and host-city law enforcement teams at our championships to protect our fans and the NCAA brand, while providing a safe environment for all those who come to support their favorite teams and the student-athletes.”
When purchasing NCAA Final Four merchandise, consumers should look for the following identifiers to ensure the merchandise they purchase is officially licensed:
All merchandise should bear the name of the authorized licensee on the product, either in the form of a hangtag, a neck label, or screen-printed directly on the garment.
All officially licensed merchandise should display the NCAA “Officially Licensed Product” hologram somewhere on the product or hangtag.
The merchandise should depict the NCAA and participating universities’ marks in a tasteful manner, consistent with the designs and school depictions approved by the NCAA and participating institutions.
The tag on the garment should be intact. A torn or missing tag is evidence of a second-hand garment, one that probably would not meet the stringent quality standards put in place by the NCAA and the participating institutions.
Royalties generated from the sale of officially licensed tournament products are returned to the NCAA and participating institutions to support scholarships and other vital programs and initiatives.
